The University of Salford

Year 2022

  • Filming coverage across 3 days of the event
  • Produced as part of the national Being Human Festival

A team within the University of Salford were leading various events and activities contributing to the 2022 Being Human Festival, a UK festival celebrating the humanities. As part of their contribution, workshops were hosted, lectures were given and a short film shot in South Africa was being premiered in Salford.

With all of these engaging events being put on, capturing captivating videos of them all felt like the perfect idea to enable the engagement with the public to stretch out even further.

The Project Brief

To capture a wide array of coverage, highlighting all that was taking place during the festival at the University of Salford, we needed to produce six different videos. These would involve filming at a film premiere, a lecture and during various workshops.

With lots of different activities going on throughout the festival, we’d need to be agile in the different styles of footage we’d capture. The videos would be made up of general event coverage, showing attendees engaging with each other and getting involved with the events. There would also be panel discussions, on-stage speakers and interviews with the festival hosts.

The resulting edits would be

  • 3x Event overview videos
  • 3x Panel discussions

How We Approached It

In the world of event video production, coverage is very important. Each section of the festival required multiple cameras used in various ways. Roving cameras captured event overview footage, with static cameras capturing longer panels and then handheld cameras added to the mix when capturing informal interviews.

Lengthier events like panels and lectures required static cameras to be filming for a long time, whilst our roving cameras were picking out details from the events that we knew would stand out as highlights in the edit.

The edits then combined all of the footage with relevant reference clips provided by the festival organisers to enable us to bring together a well-rounded set of videos.

The End
Result

Across the six videos, we were able to feature all of the main contributors to the event as well as a wide array of individuals who took part.

The festival’s aim was to share its unique insight into the humanities in different ways and with a variety of people. The selection of videos successfully captured the essence of the event, meaning that all those who watched them could feel a connection to the festival even if they didn’t attend.
